Godiva Chocolate Truffles: Dark Gems

These Dark Godiva Chocolate Truffles are part of the Godiva chocolate truffles Gems Collection. Similar to the previous post, the bag these chocolates are in is decorated with purple and gold. I would associate the words ‘wealth’ and ‘luxury’ with Godiva chocolate truffles in general since they’re pricey and downright delicious. But do these Dark Godiva Chocolate Truffle Gems live up to the Godiva name?

These chocolates are packaged in what look like fancied up brown paper lunch bags. Looking into the bag, it reminded me of how companies package potato chips. Don’t you just hate how potato chips are packaged to only fill up half the bag? These chocolates are similar; you only get 12 godiva chocolate truffles in one bag when it seems they could have easily fit in 20. Each godiva chocolate truffle is individually wrapped. They are round shaped and have “GODIVA” imprinted about four times on each of them. A little much maybe?

Eating them, you can tell they’re dark chocolates, but even so, they are more sweet than they are bitter. Inside each round ball is the rich, creamy filling that makes these truffles. Think rich, smooth, and creamy chocolate. Each godiva chocolate truffle has a line that circles the middle and I have found that biting on the line separates the truffle in half quite nicely. So I eat them that way to savor each truffle and slowly finish them off. One bag costs about $4 but it is a very nice addition to the Godiva brand. If milk chocolate is your thing, do know that these Godiva Chocolate Truffle Gems are also available in milk chocolate =D

Don't lick the walls. An all-chocolate room was unveiled in Manhattan on Tuesday — a pre-Valentine's Day creation complete with furniture and artwork made of the sweet stuff. "It's the perfect bit of sin," said Ali Larter, star of TV's "Heroes," of the Godiva chocolate truffles that are her private daily indulgence. Here, they were dripping off the chandeliers above the dining table, which was a sea of stars, truffles and crescents — all chocolate, of course, under glass. Larter is the celebrity face hired by the Belgian chocolatier for its annual Valentine's Day promotion contest. This year, anyone who buys the winning box of chocolates — for $23 and up — may win the chocolate room. It is to be re-created in a suite of Manhattan's Bryant Park Hotel for a pampered getaway weekend for two in May. Godiva maker of Godiva Chocolate Truffles Rides in a New Direction

At a time when many consumers are drinking tap water rather than bottled water, shopping at Wal Mart rather than department stores and eating in rather than dining out, a high-end chocolatier is making over its marketing to better fit in with the new mood.

The Godiva brand of chocolate is introducing a campaign that carries the theme “the golden moment.” The campaign, with a budget estimated at $3.5 million to $4 million, is the first work for Godiva from its new agency, Lipman in New York.

The campaign, composed of print and out-of-home advertising, does not seek to reposition Godiva as an alternative to Hershey or other mass-market candy brands. Nor does it suggest, as so many ads for upscale products do these days, that Godiva is a good value.

Rather, the campaign seeks to explain why Godiva is still worth buying during tough times, using an emotional appeal to make the case that a brief respite to indulge oneself — “the golden moment,” as it were — is as desirable now as it was when the Dow was at 14,000.

“When you give the gold box, receive the gold box, eating something from the gold box, there’s something special about that moment,” she says, adding that the hope is for the new theme of “the golden moment” to “become the new brand essence” of Godiva.

“It’s more inward-looking,” she says, “about how you feel about yourself” rather than trying to impress others.

“People can trade down from a Tiffany silver piece to a Godiva gold box,” Ms. Kien Kotcher says.

“You can still get a beautiful, classy gift for $15” from Godiva, she adds, and “$25 buys you a fabulous gift you’d be proud to give to anybody.”

Still, Godiva is not completely unmindful of the wrenching changes in shopper behavior wrought by the economy. The company has brought out a lower-priced line named Godiva Gems, intended to help make consumers perceive the premium brand as more affordable or accessible.

“The idea is to appeal to consumers in different places and times who want a little piece of chocolate,” Ms. Kien Kotcher says. “You can have your own golden moment at home, by yourself.”
